Transportation Development Centre
HIGHWAY- RAILWAY GRADE CROSSING RESEARCH PROGRAM

The Transportation Development Centre (TDC) is Transport Canada's research organization. It manages an R&D program that covers all transportation modes - air, marine, road, and rail - as well as transportation of dangerous goods, accessibility, human factors, and intelligent transportation systems. The objective of the Highway-Railway Grade Crossing Research Program is to investigate options for increasing the safety of highway-railway grade crossings through application of innovative technologies and improvements to existing systems. This initiative was developed in cooperation with Transport Canada Rail Safety and with Direction 2006. The research plan was formulated in collaboration with the railways, provincial governments, municipalities, and other stakeholders. TDC is serving as the research program office.
